Frequently Asked Questions
How do you count laps in the pool?
We measure your swim distance in lengths, not laps. Each time you touch the wall counts as one length. We’ll have a volunteer at each lane, available to record lengths completed. There will be a pool deck clock to ensure you are aware of when the swim portion has ended. There will be a Race Director in the pool to answer any questions you may have beforehand. Lanes are assigned on a first come, first serve basis unless there is a special request for physical limitations or younger athletes.
Do I have to swim a certain stroke?
There is no requirement to swim a particular swim stroke.
What if I need a break during the swim?
You are allowed to take a break during the swim, should you require. It will not count against you.
Can I wear a life jacket or use a snorkel during the swim?
IF you wear a life jacket or snorkel during the swim, you will not be eligible for any awards, should you place in the top three male/female. You will not be officially placed in the overall rankings of all the participants. If this is of no concern to you, let us know prior to your start time that you request the use of a snorkel or Life Jacket.
Will there be a place to change out of my swimsuit before the bike?
Yes. We have gender specific locker rooms and/or the use of the Family locker rooms all located near the pool. Please arrive early so you can find these locations prior to your Heat Start time. Ask a volunteer if you require assistance.
What type of bikes do we use?
We use a Stages SC3 Indoor Cycle Bike, located in our Spin classroom. The Cycle room is located at the front of the Facility, next to the Ice Skate Desk. You can use clip ins to clip into the bike or the cages that are attached to the pedal.
How do you keep track of distance on the indoor bike?
We have a volunteer who will assist in recording the final calculated numbers on your bike Power Meter. There will be a Cycle instructor, familiar with the bikes who will assist with ensuring the accuracy of recorded information and answer any Cycle questions you may have. They will also be able to adjust your bike to the proper height for you. Come to the Day before Course Preview, and we will size you to the Cycle bike. We record to the nearest 10th of a mile.
Can I use a personal music player during the bike and run?
Yes, you may use a personal music player during the bike and run. There will, however, be music playing in the Cycle room over the main speakers.
How is the Run completed and recorded?
The Run portion of the Indoor Event is completed on our Race Track on the Third Floor of the Facility. You can access the Track via stairs, or elevator located at the West side of the Facility, near the Rock Climbing wall. Your laps will be counted using our timing system. There will be a race chip located on the back of your race bib that you will receive at packet pick up. The race bib needs to be worn on the front of your clothing and attached with two pins that will be provided. We will have volunteer count the laps as a back up to the timing system to ensure accuracy of laps completed. 9 laps on the outermost portion of the track equals 1 mile.
When and where will results be posted?
Results will be posted to the South Davis Races website, no later than 10:00 a.m. the following day. We will email you the results approx. 1-2 hours after completion of the last Heat. Please make sure to include your email address on all registration items so as to ensure that we have your current email address.
How are the points calculated?
The participant who goes the greatest distance in a particular leg receives 100 points for that leg. All other participants will receive a percentage of those points based on their distance traveled in that leg. Each leg of the race counts equally towards the total score.
Example: participant 1 swims the furthest distance, 35 lengths; She receives 100 points. participant 2 swims 30 lengths; 30 ÷ 35 = .85 × 100 = 85; he receives 85 points. Swim + Bike + Run = total score. Final results will divide Men & Women in their own divisions. Any protests will be noted at the time they are recorded, but the judgment of the head ref of each portion of the event is final and no adjustments will take place to the racers score after the fact.
Can my child participate with me?
Yes. Your child may participate, and with supervision if needed. Please contact the Race Director so that they can be aware of this special set of circumstances. We will accommodate any young children interested in participating in our Indoor Triathlon.
How and when do I pick up my packet?
Participants will be placed in heats. Each heat is a 30 minute time slot, beginning with a 7:00 p.m. slot. Each slot, thereafter, begins on the ½ hour. You will be assigned a heat, randomly unless you contact the Race Director and make a request. All requests will be considered and we will do our best to ensure your needs are met should you require a certain time slot, or be in a certain heat with fellow participants who have registered with you. Email: sjohnson@southdavisrecreation.com to submit a request.
Packet pick up will take place in the lobby area of the Recreation Facility. Please come at least 30 minutes prior to your heat start time to pick up your packet and race bib. We will have a customized Indoor Triathlon Collector’s mug as well as race swag for you to pick up.
Will there be post-race snacks/water etc.?
Yes. We will provide bananas or oranges From Our local Natural Grocers and Gatorade and water options. Our local sponsors, Nothing Bundt Cakes, will provide bitesize cake samples at each Indoor Triathlon. YUM!
